How Bizarre!

Wacky nail art, press-on lip tattoos, questionably colored hair (I’m looking at you, Kelly Osbourne) — there’s no arguing that bizarre beauty trends are having a major moment. I test out three offbeat looks in Miami for Refinery29 and give you the 411 on where to snag the them — trends you may love, hate or be just plain scared of.

{Scalpel Facials}

Move over bird-poo or placenta facials (no, those aren’t typos), the latest facial involves a medical scalpel. Known as derma planing, a surgical blade is held to the skin at a 45-degree angle and stroked along the skin, just like shaving. Dead skin cells and hair are sloughed off, and when followed up with a peel, extractions, dry ice application and moisturizer — the skin is left luminous, taut and smooth. “My patients are positively obsessed with the Micro Peel Facial as it’s entirely result-driven,” Doctor Andrea Trowers says.

{Rainbow Brite hair}

Dip-dye hair is de rigueur but if you desire a less permanent and less damaging look, try gone-in-day hair chalking or colored hair extensions. “Think of hair chalking as makeup for the mane — once you wash or even shake out the chalky color from your hair, it’s gone,” Salon Vaso Hairstylist Natalia Mejia says. “If you want a bolder effect, we can always dye hair extensions any color you want and you can take them off whenever you want,” Mejia adds.

{Food on your fingertips}

Hamburgers, pizza, sushi, popcorn — oh my! — food fingernail art is funky and fun. Esthetician Ginger Nguyen at Salon Vaso can bake up a batch of cute-as-a-cupcake nails in a snap (and these treats won’t widen thou waistline). Nguyen says, “I can paint it all — the crazier the better!” I love where her head’s at, natch.

    Well first I love the nail polish but in my case of “nail bitters anonymous” I prefer staying away from the edible look. I love the nail polish though. Blade on the face? Do you get thicker hair and growth afterwards on your face? I want ti stay away from being on Dr. Phil show talking about my hypertrichosis of the face. (exaggeration)
