Why I Always Do Something That Scares The Crap Out of Me

Last week, I dabbled in something that scared the living shit out of me. No, not crack. No, not playing the drums while naked. And no, not  by wearing a polyester dress. Ew. Polyester is against my religion.

You see, I taught my first online “Blogging 101” class with Nikki Novo via the web, and sure, there were some technical glitches but I feel confident we did a stellar job. Because we gave it our all — and that is all we’ve got, right?

But the days leading up to the live class had me extremely on edge and nervous. I found a barrage of negative sentiments swimming through my brain such as: “What if my internet goes down?” or “What if I suffer a live aneurysm?” to “What if I have to burp really loudly?” to “What if the students drop out after 3 minutes?” I know, these were some psycho, crazy, mental ward-esque thoughts but it’s only human to feel apocalyptic on the precipice of doing something novel and scary, right? Right-o.

Here’s the funny thing in all this: The moment that little green camera light on my computer started to flicker and we were live with a bunch of students tuned in, well, the fear dissipated. I could breathe easier. I was cooler than a polar bear’s toenails. And sharing my insights with my students felt empowering, uplifting and the very opposite of the word, “afraid.”

This being said, the prolific Eleanor Roosevelt was decisively correct when she said, “Do one thing every day that scares you.” Face your fears and teach yourself that you can handle what life throws at you. LIKE A BOSS.
