Fish Pedicure

One of my life’s bucket list items has always been to get a fish pedicure. Crazy, I know. CRAZY AWESOME. For those of you unfamiliar with this nibbly treatment — minnow-sized fish called doctor fish are placed in clean aquariums where they go to town on your feet — eating away dead skin cells, supposedly leaving skin all smooth like that as-seen-on-TV Ped Egg thingy you can buy at Walgreens. Fish pedicures are omnipresent throughout Europe and Asia but the practice is banned in several United States and Canadian provinces as cosmetology regulators believe the practice is unsanitary, with the Wall Street Journal claiming that, “Cosmetology regulations generally mandate that tools need to be discarded or sanitized after each use. But epidermis-eating fish are too expensive to throw away.”

I mean, come on. Where is the YOLO factor here? Lame-o.

Once I saw the Kardashian klan going hog at a fish pedicure salon in Santorini, my heart performed cartwheels knowing that I, too, could soon check this odd item off my bucket list.

The 411? The feeling is straight-up weird — and tickles a lot. For 15 Euros, you basically pay to have starved sardines chomp on your soles —providing them free grub — with flailing results. Even though my feet weren’t soft like a baby’s ass afterward, the looks on the faces of my father and husband (who joined me in the ridiculousness) were downright hysterical.

And that, my friends, is absolutely priceless.
