The newest face to grace Esteé Lauder’s campaigns was the toast of the town recently in Miami. Puerto Rican-born model Joan Smalls hosted a private luncheon at chichi Casa Tua for her spokesmodel debut with the beauty tour de force. I chatted up Smalls on the coveted Esteé Lauder gig, her La Isla Del Encanto roots and her Miami musts.
Congratulations on becoming the new face of Estée Lauder! How does it feel to join the likes of the brand’s beauties such as Hilary Rhoda, Carolyn Murphy and Elizabeth Hurley? I am honored to now be a part of the Estée Lauder brand; it’s been a dream fulfilled! It has been a wonderful platform for my career for which I am very grateful.
You are Estée Lauder’s first model hailing from Puerto Rico. What kind of response are you getting from La Isla Del Encanto? The response from the island has been very positive. It demonstrates that even if you are from a beautiful, small island, opportunity is there for the taking.
You’ve worked with a spate of celebrated photographers — Mario Testino, Steven Meisel and Patrick Demarchelier, to name a few. What’s been the best part about your job? Being able to say that I’ve had the privilege to work with such legends in the industry is a great feeling. They’ve helped me realize that we can all aspire to be our best and follow our dreams.
What is your favorite beauty product? Esteé Lauder Sumptuous Extreme Mascara in Black.
What is the best beauty tip you can share with us? For extra full lashes, make sure you get deep at the base of your eyelash and re-apply at least twice a day.
What do you love most about Miami? The food! You can find really great Spanish restaurants.
What is Miami’s best-kept secret? I love the Soho Beach House for its quiet vibe and beautiful views. It is the perfect place to relax.
If you were on a deserted island, what would be your one luxury item? I would certainly bring my Bronze Goddess SPF 30 for Face to protect myself from the sun.
What is the best advice you can give aspiring models?
Remain true to yourself. Don’t let anything or anyone deter you from your goal in life, regardless of who they are.
