My New Morning Ritual

My body isn’t responding to diet and exercise the way it used to. With the latter said, things that happened to me this year at the age of 41 include: A slower metabolism, hunger pangs and a sluggish feeling throughout the day.

I was talking to my gorgeous health nut friend, blogger and recipe developer Sally Schimko about this dilemma (follow her on Instagram via @mysexyveggies) and she suggested drinking warm lemon water every morning with a spoonful of inulin.

Sally tells me the benefits of lemon water include:

“Lemon helps maintain the pH balance of the body. Along with Vitamin C, lemons are a rich source of potassium, calcium, phosphorous, magnesium and more. Lemon juice with warm water helps in quick weight loss as it promotes digestion and increases the metabolic rate.”

My two cents? Even if lemon water offers a placebo effect — an approach not traditionally found in Western medicine — it helps set the tone for the rest of my day when it comes to healthier food choices and a more Zen mindset.

Now for inulin. The BIG KAHUNA in weight loss and healthy pooping practice. Sally tells me:

“Inulin is a pure fiber found in Jerusalem artichokes. First, it cleans your gut. Then it creates bacteria which keep your gut clean. The more, the merrier! Inulin keeps your cortisol level in balance which promotes happiness. In terms of weight loss, inulin makes you feel fuller. And most importantly — inulin will create more bowel movements throughout your day.”

My inulin experience so far? I drink one spoonful in the morning with my lemon water and one spoonful in the evening. The first day, my stomach felt a little upset and bloated and I went to number two four times (TMI but true)! Yep, you read that right. A week into my new morning ritual of lemon water and inulin? I feel satiated (bye bye, random hunger pangs!) and I’m definitely pooping more on a daily basis. I’m down two pounds and couldn’t be happier. If you want inulin, DM @mysexyveggies on Instagram and tell her I sent you.
