The Couple That Sweats Together, Laughs Together

{My go-to workout look? Murdered-out Lululemon.}

Someone sound the I-never-thought-this-would-happen-in-a-gazillion-years-alarm…the husband decided to join Massi and I on our tri-weekly workouts. The result? Think couples therapy where you actually loose weight and have a blast. Winning! The truth? Sebastian saw the positive change in both my mood and body after just one week training alongside Massi and he was jelly. Ok, ok, he never uttered the word, “jelly,” but you dig my flow, right? Right.

So here we are working out side by side and it’s been hysterical for me because when else can you lambast your loved one with words such as, “Move your ass! Come on — are you a mouse or a man!? Are you SERIOUSLY eating a WHEAT THIN right now?! You want a COKE — are you aware COKE is loaded with high-fructose corn syrup? — it’s the cellulite devil dressed up in a red tin can!!!!!” without getting the stankeye? Exactly.

Aside from working out like Jessica Simpson did for Dukes of Hazzard, last week we focused on meditating and manifesting positive intentions. This week? The lesson is food. Since I have an affinity for astronaut food (cereal bars, chips, processed crap) and never ate breakfast (coffee would do), Massi taught me how to cook a healthy b’fast.

{Can you smell what the coach is cooking?}

Here’s her recipe for a solid Neanderthal-like meal: Boil one cup of water. Add 4 teaspoons of rolled oats and 1 teaspoon of Thompson raisins. Once mushy, add sliced almonds for some crunch factor (All 3 are found in the scooper section of Whole Foods). Serve with half a banana. Voilà! You will feel full, energetic and want to hug a loved one. In my case, that’s Sebastian — sweat stains, stinkiness and all.

    Big T, great article! In today’s world most people are misinformed about food and exercise goals are not long term. The best way to stay on the exercise kick is to do something you love. Find yourself an EXPERIENCED and KNOWLEDGEABLE coach with credentials and tell him or her what you enjoy doing. Nowadays I hear women enrolling in running programs yet they never were taught how to run correctly. And yes, Ill say it, to all your cross-fit peeps, watch out for injuries. Thats cool you can squat over 100 pounds but what is the purpose? There are too many “trainers” pushing the latest food and exercise fashion that can turn your world into a cluster. All my clients go through a video analysis on FMS (functional movement screening), and I base all my exercise programs on correcting these movements. Metabolic conditioning or cardio is essential to a healthy heart but most people stay in the high 80% target heart rate throughout the whole cardio session, why? Wearing a heart rate monitor can help you learn what is “too much”. Keep in mind that most importantly its about how fast you recover. As your heart becomes stronger you are able to recover more efficiently. FInd yourself a coach who has A LOT of knowledge on anatomy and physiology (not just talking about your obvious muscles like quads and chest) but a coach who knows how to break down improper movements and teach it in an organized fashion to avoid injury. Food is a completely separate entity. Ninety percent of the work is eating foods that grow on their own. If it doesn’t grow on its own don’t eat it. I give my clients the knowledge to make sound decisions. I dont tell them what to eat rather I incorporate the foods that they love and how to cook them and make it with flavor. Stick to the basis of “if it doesn’t grow don’t eat it” theory. Its time for people to hear the truth about exercise and food. Getting the right information is the key to long term success. Cheers to Seba and Maria and their life long commitment to happiness! Booyah!
