What better way to kick off my 47th birthday than with a good ol’ colon cleansing to help clear me out?
For those of you not-in-the-know, a colonic is a procedure where water is infused into the colon to flush out all of the toxins and collected plaque. Think of it as way to get rid of accumulated stool and waste in your colon.
This is my third colonic, but for the uninitiated, a colonic is essentially a way to hydrate and irrigate your colon — a section of your intestines that’s approximately 5 feet long — by filling it with warm water and then flushing it out repeatedly. Like cleanses, the efficacy (and safety) of colonics is often debated: Proponents argue that it’s crucial for moving things along, particularly because our systems are over-taxed by clearing the toxins of modern-day life, while critics posit that the colon is perfectly capable of cleansing itself on the regular. No pun intended
Either way, the procedure is not as bad as you think. I went to Feel the Heal in North Miami for mine where the vibe is cozy and clean. I was given my own set of disposable instruments, which were thrown away after the treatment. My therapist Mary Jane inserted a speculum 2–3 inches into my rectum and we tuned into Love is Blind. This tube then fills the colon with water which is then released once you feel the urge “to go.” You can actually see what comes out of the depths of your colon compliments of a clear tube. TMI? Sorry not sorry!
During the procedure, I was given a Theragun and massaged my abdominal area to stimulate the treatment and help the process move along (literally). Mary Jane popped in and out of the room to check on me and the entire treatment can take 40 minutes ($120) or 1 hour ($160). Mary Jane recommends to go once a week for 4 to 6 weeks depending on your state of colon.
“The objective should not be an empty colon or just weight loss but rather a well-functioning colon. Yes, these are byproducts, and good ones at that, but the true goal here is good health,” Feel The Heal tells me.
