Jersey Girl

{Cape May’s Mainstay Inn}

If you didn’t already know, I’m a proud Jersey Shore girl. I grew up in America’s Oldest Seashore Resort called Cape May and still frequent this impossibly precious town whenever I can. In fact, I spend every Halloween there with my kids because I find Halloween in Miami painfully depressing — I miss trick-or-treating in the chilly weather, Fall decorations, dolled-up Victorian homes and creepy haunted houses to no end.

I visited Cape May days before Hurricane Sandy hit and wanted to share these pictures with you. Many of you called, texted and emailed to see how my parents were holding up during the storm and I thank you for that kind gesture — Cape May fared very well compared to its neighboring Shore towns. When I watched the news’ post-coverage of the behemothic storm, I couldn’t help but cry when I saw so many of my childhood landmarks literally annihilated — swept away from the ocean’s wrath. Some towns have become virtual beaches, so many are without power and cold, so many hearts have been broken. It’s all too much to bear.

But if there’s anyone who can get back up on their feet after a heavy hit, it’s a Jersey Girl or Guy. New Jersey’s people have grit and determination like no other. I know they will revive, rebuild and recover. So if you can help those in need, I encourage you to donate to the Red Cross. In the meantime, here are some pictures to remind you how splendid the real Jersey Shore is…
