You know me… I’ll try anything once. Especially when it comes to holistic healing. And weight loss. Duh. From acupuncture to cupping to B-12 shots to cryotherapy to colonics, I love exploring new modalities to help myself be an iota better.
Enter the infrared sauna at freshly minted Melt on Miami Beach.
I spotted this toasty device on an episode of Vanderpump Rules (embarrassing admission, I know!). Obnoxious Jax was trying to lose weight so naturally, I googled it and learned that an infrared sauna is a type of sauna that uses light to create heat. The appeal? Saunas cause reactions similar to those elicited by moderate exercise, such as vigorous sweating and increased heart rate.
The benefits according to Jess at Melt? Fans say the effects of using infrared saunas include muscle and organ relaxation, detoxification, pain relief, improved cell health, better circulation, anti-aging, skin purification and (the holy grail) weight loss.
I was able to handle 30 minutes in the sweltering hot sauna (120 degrees!) and kept myself entertained by playing on my iPhone and reading about chromatherapy.
After my session, I noticed I was super sweaty (yay!), my skin was glow-y and my mood was weirdly calm. I slept like a baby that night, too.
My tips? Leave your swimsuit at home — you just need a towel which Melt provides guests. Bring a book, some tunes and water, too. Pack a loose cotton outfit to wear after your session as you will continue to sweat.
